2001 : A SPACE ODYSSEY

How is it possible for an individual to come up with so much of creativity??? What a movie!!! I am still baffled and astonished in equal measures...who else but Stanley Kubrick would have the guts to present us with hardly 40 minutes of dialogue...2001: A Space Odyssey is what I would like term “ a sci – fi silent musical ”... the movie is all about man's fascination with space exploration, utilization of the latest technology to make life more simpler, cyclic evolution of mankind...

the portions that interested me the most was the opening sequence showing prehistoric playing with bones, the black monolith still astounds me time and again, the state of the art technology used by the humans and of course the last 40 minutes which in my opinion contains the greatest special effects ever made of use in motion cinema history...the Star Gate sequence shows Dave ( Keir Dullea) travelling at the speed of light across various landscapes in a multitude of colours ( it's as if we are witnessing an astronomer who is completely stoned and his mind is playing tricks on him),this in particular is brilliantly done as well as little creepy also...which brings me to my favourite scene in the movie the Star – Child sequence which indcates that we as a viewer have witnessed life from birth to old age and then back to birth...No other movie has made of music in a better fashion...who can forget the usage of “Thus Spake Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss and “the Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss... the famous Kubrick stare is given by HAL ( who ironically turns from a foe to someone you feel sorry for)...

with the help of science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke ( taken from his story " the Sentinel" published in 1950), Kubrick made use of surrealistic imagery to portray poetry on celluloid... the word odyssey was a tribute to the legendary Homer...The movie was released a whole year before man landed on the moon...film makers like George Lucas ( Star Wars), Steven Spielberg ( Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T) were clearly inspired from 2001... was the Oscar Academy sleeping???? you guys should be ashamed of yourselves,Oliver was better than 2001??? 2001 is the definitive science fiction movie...the special effects are yet to be matched... a movie for the ages...
